History The Tunisification of TUNISAIR

1958-1967 : The Tunisification  of The airline

The year 1958 witnessed the tunisification of the airline personnel. Pilots, flight engineers and technicians specialised in aircraft maintenance were trained in cooperation with the civil aviation services in France and in Morocco while Tunisian cabin attendants started joining the company.

For aircraft ground operation, a new service was created: "Ground Handling". The service was successful and was then expanded to foreign airlines. - In 1961 , the first Caravelle purchased by "Tunis-air" landed at El Aouina airport.

The introduction of that aircraft represented a revolution in terms of speed and seat capacity and allowed the company to operate bi-weekly and tri-weekly flights to destinations in France.
In 1962, the runway of El Aouina was extended to accommodate larger jet aircraft such as the Boeing 707.
Pursuing its fleet modernization policy and in replacement of the DC 4, " Tunisair" took delivery , in April 1964, of its second Caravelle followed by a third one a year later. During that decade, Tunisair launched new routes to Geneva, Zurich, Brussels, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Casablanca and Cairo in addition to flights to Saudi Arabia for The Hajj. In 1965, the first offices overseas were opened in Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt, Rome and Brussels.
