History Meeting the challenge

1998 - 2009: The Challenge

In 1998, Tunisair reached the figure of 50 million passengers since its creation.
Two major contracts were then signed with Boeing and Airbus for the purchase of 15 aircraft (belonging to A 320 and B 737 families).

On another hand, Tunisair signed in 1999, a code share agreement with Air France.
Amadeus Tunisia, a provider of IT solutions to travel industry, was also launched .

Tunisair started the new millennium with the acquisition of 3 wide body aircraft, Airbus A 300-600 and took delivery of 4 Boeing B 737-600 and 2 Airbus A 320, over the period between 2000-2002.
In 2001, the creation of the new subsidiary, « Tunisie Catering», represented a turning point for Tunisair.

One of the highlights of 2003 was the creation of a centre dedicated to the training of technical crew and aircraft technicians on flight simulators for the A320 family : the Aviation Training Centre of Tunisia (ATCT).

In 2003, the start of company's restructuring programme marked a major milestone. It aimed at improving competitiveness, optimizing human resources, externalizing its ancillary activities and setting up an appropriate commercial strategy.

In March 2004, Tunisair obtained the Version 2000 ISO 9001certification for ground and flight operations.

In March 2005
, Tunisair introduced on some destinations, e- ticketing, which was generalized in 2007, as well as on-line sales via its website: www.tunisair.com
During this same year, Tunisair made a major contribution to the success of the World Summit on the Information Society ( WSIS), as the offi¬cial carrier for this event.

As regarding its externalization scheme, Tunisair set up separate units: Tunisair Handling, for the ground handling in 2005, and Tunisajr Technics, for maintenance in 2006.

On 24 May 2006, Tunisair developed a new commercial Strategy aimed at developing the regular activity and promoting Tunis Carthage airport as a hub and expanding the network to include long haul routes
The decade witnessed also the launching of two direct routes to Benghazi, Dubai, Bamako, Abidjan, Bahrain and Kuwait.

In April 2007, a new type of Extended Range Airbus A319 (1 new A319 ER and a second retrofitted A319) was introduced to allow operating direct flights to Africa and Middle East.

In November 2007, Tunisair created a new subsidiary, Mauritania Airways to operate domestic and regional flights in West Africa as well as international flights between Nouak Chatt and Paris.
The year 2008 was marked by the development of Tunisair fleet plan ( 2007-2016).

Firm contracts were signed with Airbus for the acquisition of 16 aircraft ( 10 A 320, 3 A330 and 3 A 350) to be delivered over the period 2011-2019 along with an option for 3 more ( 2 A320 and 1 A350).

Tunisair has also signed an industrial partnership with Airbus, allowing the creation of 2000 jobs and direct investment in the manufacturing of aeronautical components.

Tunisair launched a joint venture for the externalisation of its IT activities and the creation of a separate unit "AISA".
